I was sorry I did. Now, I imagine that some boss somewhere really does respect his employees and has used attitude surveys to find out what they need to make their work lives more bearable and their labor more fruitful. But I never met the guy. The guys I met wanted to know what their employees were thinking so they could control them better. My clients were interested in - or I got them interested in - heading off union-organizing drives, sometimes by identifying little workplace problems and making small improvements, but mainly by detecting union sympathies and weeding out dissenters.
